Code Matters is a three-workshop series introducing middle school girls to the basics of coding through MIT's App Inventor and HTML. During the last workshop, girls will be challenged to work in groups to create a App Inventor or HTML platform to raise awareness of an issue that they are passionate about, which they will present to a panel of female engineers from Columbia University's Society of Women Engineers.

More About the Program

The first workshop session will be an introduction to building animations and games using sprites and block coding in MIT's App Inventor. During the second workshop, the girls will dive in to creating simple websites using HTML with www.codepen.io. In the last workshop, girls will be challenged to work in groups to create either a App Inventor or HTML platform using the knowledge they have gained from previous workshops to raise awareness of an issue they are passionate about. They will then pitch their platform to a panel of female engineers from Columbia University's SWE, who will give the girls feedback on their projects and presentations. We will also be touring the girls around Columbia University's engineering labs and SWE engineers will also answer any questions that the girls have about their experiences as women in STEM through a career panel.
