Bytes of Code is an outreach program supported by Santa Ana Public Library, focusing primarily at underserved girls in sixth through eighth grades in the Santa Ana and Tustin school districts. We are offering coding and interactive robotic workshops in a fun environment with a potential visit to high-tech companies.

More About the Program

Bytes of Code (BoC) is an outreach program aimed at rising seventh through ninth grade girls in the neighboring communities of Irvine, Tustin, and Santa Ana school districts. We are opening the world of computing by offering girls the opportunities to learn coding languages such as HTML and CSS, JavaScript, robotics, web development, and app development, in a fun environment surrounded by other girls and taught by near-peers.

Lesson 1: Electric Circuit & Sphero

Session goals: to understand how an electric circuit works and its application to electrical systems that we use in our everyday life; to discover how we can program a long string of codes that controls different sensors on the Sphero and make it climb ramps, roll across the floor, come to a halt, or blink different colors.

Lesson 2: Arduino Programming

We will connect microcontrollers to PCs and learn to program simple commands to control blinking patterns on LEDs.

Lesson 3: Web Development

Learn to use the HTML and CSS to create and design web pages.

Lesson 4: App Development 

Use Thunkable to understand the process of creating a mobile app.
