More About the Program

Girls the Coders uses Scratch, an easy to learn block-based language, to introduce participants to essential computing skills while using simple syntax. Several of the concepts learned are used in other programming languages, such as C++ or Java, that hopefully participants will learn as they get older. This program is intended to give girls background/confidence in coding and encourage them to pursue technology opportunities in high school and beyond if interested.

No coding experience is needed. Each session will have adequate time built in to practice the new concepts learned in Scratch with mini assignments. We will also be inviting guest speakers pursuing a technology degree in college and working in a tech field to offer advice and insight to participants about their own experiences. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

Please feel free to email girlsthecoders@gmail.com with any questions or concerns!

Schedule

Meeting 1: Introduction to Scratch and the different scripts that can be built. Girls will learn about fundamentals (conditionals and loops).

Meeting 2: Explore the more advanced blocks used to make codes more complex. Girls will learn more programming concepts such as variables, as well as practice with theoretical aspects of computer science like Boolean.

Meeting 3: Girls will discover ways to make their programs more personalized on Scratch by uploading custom images/sound. The final project assignment will be introduced, so we will go over the design process and brainstorm ideas for games or animations.

Meeting 4: Girls will select an idea to address the social issue and begin coding.

Meeting 5: Participants will finalize their social projects and showcase them.
