More About the Program

By participating in ReInvent IT, the girls will gain more knowledge on the fundamentals of app design, various teamwork skills, drag-and-drop coding for MIT App Inventor, social issues and their impact on the world, and presentation skills. With the help of the session leader and assistants, the participants will follow along with tutorials in order to understand the basics of MIT App Inventor.

The girls will relate their project to a social issue using app development, which allows them to educate others on the importance of their social issue and how they can make a difference for society. In order to showcase their project to judges, the girls will learn how to create a presentation, through PowerPoint or a website, in which they can present their application, the social issue, and the coding behind it. Lastly, throughout the week, the girls will be working in groups for their project which will benefit them in learning how to communicate, contribute, and cooperate. In the end, we want the girls to get interested in the STEM field and explore various educational and career pathways in the computing field. My team will take all efforts to make sure the girls reach these learning goals.

ReInvent IT will allow girls to apply technological skills into project and app development and learn the importance of collaboration and cooperation among their team members and the mentors. This program also provides girls with an exploration of education and career paths in computing. They can use their knowledge learning in this program to apply to their future careers. The girls can use their knowledge about the social issue that they researched in order to make an impact on their own communities. Finally, the girls can learn the fundamentals of app design so they can effectively showcase their app design, programming, social issue, and their overall experience to the judges.

ReInvent IT will teach participants various skills about MIT App Inventor.

The first meetings will begin by introducing the principles of app development and how the code functions. There will also be an interactive section of the presentation where girls will have an opportunity to ask questions and share their previous interactions with technology. Each student will most likely have their own laptop and will be able to use the program while the program leader does a live tutorial on a projector. The tutorial will teach how to use the Designer and Blocks editor components of MIT App Inventor. The tutorials will occur on Day 1 and 2 of the camp to ensure that every participant has tried the session.

From Day 3 to Day 5, all participants who have finalized their session as MIT App Inventor will focus on creating a final project to present to judges. There will be a few Android tablets that will be available to download and test their application. Using the tablets and the Android emulator, the students can see their app in live action and understand how the coding and programming allow the app to have certain features. The program leader will discuss the requirements for their potential projects throughout the week. The girls must think about a social issue that they could incorporate into their project. At each meeting for the rest of the week, the girls will only work on their final app and the presentation for judges while the program leader and session assistants can help them along the way.
