More About the Program

GidgetGirls is a week-long summer camp. The first half of the program, days 1-3, the participants will be learning HTML, CSS and EarSketch. They will begin with learning the foundations of computing and HTML, including headers, lists, inserting graphics, and links. Then the participants will learn CSS to format and manipulate the looks and design of their web pages. Afterwards they will learn EarSketch, which they can then add to their web pages. Also on day 3, the participants will meet other women in different technology disciplines. Bringing in these women will show the participants possible career paths, as well as the impact that being a woman in technology has in various facets of society. Throughout the program, the participants will research an environmental issue to provide content for a web page. The environmental issue is a way for the participants to associate technology to real life issues, and critically think about how to address the issue by raising awareness or finding a solution. The participants will work in teams of 2 or 3 to create a web page. At the conclusion of the program, each of the web pages will be combined to create a website displaying the participants' work.
