A near-peer, introductory, quick-paced 15-day computer science program for middle school girls from under-served communities that attend the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana. From building apps to building light-up greeting cards, to building systems with Arduino, the girls will gain the skills and enthusiasm to complete a project of their choice with the help of a high school mentor that can be showcased to parents and the community.

More About the Program

Share Circles will be for social reflection in groups of 4 that will rotate weekly. End of day reflections will be technically focused. Members will be discussing Social Issues such as: ethnicity and race, girl power, imposter syndrome, homelessness, bullying, and environmental damage. Girls will be encouraged to identify strengths and weaknesses, change personal beliefs for the better, develop a growth mindset, and take leadership. 

A Recruitment Day is planned for October 20 at which parents and their girls will learn about the content that will be covered in the camp as well as why women should be in tech. Parents and kids will work on a tech project together from a set list (Makey-Makey dance game, Website design,  video game storyline and creation, and multiple Lego Mindstorm robot construction and programming projects).

Topics Covered by Day:

  1. CS Unplugged (how computers think; what does "to program" mean; how is information processed)
  2. Scratch (drag-and-drop programming; variables, if-else, simple commands)
  3. Scratch (continued: functions, loops, databases)
  4. Web Development / Graphic Design (logo, animation, web design)
  5. App Inventor (drag-and-drop programming; sensor integration, databases)
  6. Electricity and Electronics (hardware)
