More About the Program

Our first workshop will teach girls HTML/CSS, giving the girls the opportunity to create their own portfolios. The next three days, the girls will work in teams to create a Scratch game that can be played using a hand-made Makey Makey controller, Sphero robotics, and Raspberry Pi. May 4th will be our #Innovate Day where all girls get the opportunity to use what they learned and create a project that addresses a global social issue. They will be mentored by UCI university students and invited computer science professionals from around Irvine. All parents will be invited to see the girls' projects, and participants will have the opportunity to take their projects home on a flashdrive. Finally, May 11th will be our Google company tour, where the girls get the opportunity to ask UCI alumni and Google software engineers questions about working with technology. Each day will feature female guest speakers and activities to get to know the UCI campus better.

All Girl Scouts can receive the My STEM Life Badge, Robotics Badge 1: Programming Robots, Robotics Badge 2: Designing Robots, Think Like a Programmer Series, and a #innovate patch for their vests.

For more information, contact Avika.

Various sessions of the program will feature real-world applications in global issues, and each day of workshops will feature a different core technology. The girls will get the chance to meet multiple female guest speakers from the tech industry, and they'll also have the chance to create a final project to showcase to the campers' families. Throughout the workshops, girls will get help from UCI student mentors and trained high school volunteers, as well as the opportunity to interact with female computer scientists at local companies.
