More About the Program
This program is designed to introduce girls to careers in STEM. It is dedicated to closing the gender gap in the computing industry. By the end of the program, we hope that students will have the basic skills necessary to convey their ideas and showcase their creativity through programming. We also hope to have sparked their interest in computer science fields. Students can choose to extend their experience throughout the rest of the school year by joining the middle school's Girls Who Code Club and/or by enrolling in the computer science pathway at Alhambra High School.
Participants will be introduced to the great world of computer science through guest speakers and videos. Then, they will have an opportunity to "dip their feet in the water" by doing some CS Unplugged Activities that will also get them thinking like computer scientists.
As the girls get more comfortable with some basic computer science skills, they will use Google's CS First Curriculum in conjunction with knowledge acquired from CS Unplugged activities to create applications to raise awareness about the need to close the gender gap in the computing industry.
The program will conclude with a "CS Fun Day" at Google's Headquarters in Mountain View, California and a tour of its campus and/or a computer science workshop at the Computer Science History Museum.
