More About the Program
ITgirl will meet for three five-hour Saturday sessions and end in a six-hour Saturday hackathon. During the first three classes, students will be introduced to App Inventor and Mobile CSP. Mobile CSP is the curriculum and it consists of written and video computer science tutorials of varying difficulty. ITgirl students will not work through all of the Mobile CSP coursework, as it is equivalent to a yearlong computer science course. However, the program leader and a group of mentors will introduce participants to the basics of computer programming with a set of select Mobile CSP lessons. The work will move from introductory computer science tasks to advanced programming skills and ideas, and, for the especially tenacious learner or returning students, there will be more advanced assignments.
Each session will focus on a different group of assignments, the schedule and agenda being predetermined and available on the ITgirl website. The entire program will be planned in advance, meaning that there will be specific deadlines for various computing units and apps. To ensure that no child is left behind but deadlines are still met, there will be a 4:1 student to mentor ratio, meaning that each student will receive individualized attention and advice. Deadlines and individual support mechanisms ensure that students are learning the basics of computer science.
Additionally, the final session of ITgirl, the hackathon, will touch more on the app development process. Students will work in small groups and run through the development process with one another and one mentor. They will brainstorm and create wireframes and potential pseudocode. They will then peer program afpp, design user interfaces, and ultimately create a presentation for judges. A process like this simulates real-world app development, including the proposal stages, and satisfies the goals of mobile app development
The aforementioned strategies and plans address the concrete learning goals, but the empowerment goals will be met via other means. We will adopt a big sister mentorship style, and integrate the club with its ongoing sister high school initiative with the hope of (a) providing students with older role models who they can relate to and (b) creating an accessible path for Hartford women to further their computer science education. Furthermore, we will use guest speakers and documentaries to expose the girls to women further down the computer science path.
