More About the Program
“GIRLS” is a face-to-face and online hybrid program targeted toward female middle school students. In this program, the participants will receive training in Swift programming through the Swift Playgrounds app and the Learn to Code 1 curriculum. WVU TECH is partnering with Raleigh County School District to offer STEM-based after school programs at Raleigh County middle schools. The GIRLS program will be offered through this existing after school program structure. During this program I will offer my GIRLS program at Beckley Stratton middle school on alternate Tuesdays to the female middle school students who are already coming to the after-school program. These female students will stay one additional hour for my programming class. Hence during fall 2019 and spring 2020 GIRLS program will meet for ten hour-long face-to-face days in which the participants will be instructed by female university students. The instructors will play the role of mentors too. The entire time during fall 2019 and spring 2020, participants will have access to Apple’s online material. Their progress will be tracked through as we continue. Finally, there will be a face-to-face celebration on May 2020 when the family members of the participants will be invited.
On this day we will include ice-breaking activities, take pre-surveys, and getting to know the participants. We will also demonstrate the online portion of the program.
Regular Days (alternate Tuesdays) :
During these days the participants will have the opportunity to have hands-on training from the instructors. This also the time for the instructors to play the role of mentors. The instructors who are current university students in computing fields will share their own experience and will also guide the participants to improve their soft skills including communication and team work.
There will be 16 total hours worth of material online for the participants to complete. At any time during the online portion, participants may contact our team members for help, guidance, or further mentoring.
Final Celebration Day:
On that day, the middle school girls will make presentations to their parents on what they learned. There will also be a female guest speaker who will talk about her experience in the computer science field and about available computer-related careers. This is also when survey responses will be collected.
